July 2020 to May 2021 Project Title: The next generation of joint species distribution models: community-based assessments of avian biodiversity and ecosystem health Supervisor: Viviana Ruiz-Gutierrez Collaborators: Daniel Fink, Carla Gomes Project Summary: This project aimed to develop and validate new quantitative methods to understand spatiotemporal patterns in avian biodiversity, with a focus on multifunctional landscapes. We worked in collaboration with the AAA Sustainable Quality Program of Nespresso on their current long-term, international project with the Cornell Lab to understand the impact of sustainable coffee production practices on avian biodiversity at the local-, landscape- and regional-levels. May 2021 to January 2022 Project Title: Integrating biological collections and observational data sources to estimate long-term butterfly population trends Supervisor: Elise Zipkin Collaborators: Robert Guralnick, Leslie Ries Project Summary: Recent studies suggest that we may be in the midst of an “insect apocalypse,” but true rates of decline for the vast majority of insect species are unknown because of data limitations. For many insect species, biological collections are the only available long-term source of data. This project aimed to use biological collections data and other observational data sources to identify current trends and drivers of butterfly population dynamics, raise public awareness about conservation and the value of museum collections, and catalyze additional museum-based research.
